The statement released by the press service of the Olympic quota holder says that last year’s world champion and this year’s seventh in the World Championships, Érdi has topped the ranking for the first time in her career.
"I am happy that I can prepare for the Olympic Games as the first Hungarian to be the world leader in the Olympic sailing class,” the statement quotes the best Hungarian female athlete of 2023, who is preparing for her third Olympics.
She added that she is currently focusing on the World Cup in Hyères, and for the tasks ahead she considers her position in the world ranking as encouraging. The athlete last competed at the World Cup in Mallorca this month, from where she took home a gold medal.
Mária Érdi’s success has written sports history, as no Hungarian sailor before her has ever managed to reach the top of the world ranking, Magyar Nemzet writes.
The ILCA 6 class champion is ahead of Germany’s Julia Büsselberg and Denmark’s Anne-Marie Rindom. It is not the first time that the Hungarian athlete has achieved unprecedented results in recent times: she won a world championship gold medal in the women’s individual class and after her European Championship medal she also won a continental championship title in Mallorca.
Her 2023 results earned her the female athlete of the year award in Hungary. Continuing this streak, now she has also topped the world rankings for the first time in her sports career.
