Fans of early music can hardly wait for the end of the Opera’s season each year. Little wonder, either, for true to our tradition of the last three years, we are again closing it out with a Baroque opera. The final premiere in the Shakespeare Season of the Hungarian State Opera is Henry Purcell’s semi-opera, The Fairy Queen turned into opera noir by director András Almási-Tóth.

To mark the start of the Shakespeare season, the Hungarian State Opera will host Shakespeare400+ festival in honour the esteemed playwright. This year, 17 adaptations will be presented in four different venues (the Opera House, Erkel Theatre, Music Academy and Müpa), including popular plays like Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Based on a fairytale, the opera is a kaleidoscope of colour, its protagonists are starkly good or evil, while their characteristics are contrasting: The friendly, simple-minded Papageno, the wise old Sarastro, the treacherous serpent, the domineering, vengeful witch known as the Queen of the Night, and the noble prince Tamino, who sets off to free his imprisoned lover Pamina.

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Snow White, whose jealous stepmother the queen made her life a misery. Chased from the royal palace, Snow White was fortunate to find a home in a small house deep in the forest belonging to seven friendly dwarves. But armed with an evil spell, the stepmother refused to give up on her desire to do away with Snow White.
