Xpat Opinion: Hungary’s PM Just Announced His Government’s Motto: Glory To God Alone
- 18 Nov 2013 12:00 AM
- current affairs
We all know about Viktor Orbán’s infatuation with the spiritual in the last few years. Maybe I just don’t remember properly, but I can’t recall much piety in his speeches during his first premiership between 1998 and 2002. Today, by contrast, his speeches are teeming with Biblical quotations and Latin religious phrases. And his generosity toward the “established” churches, especially the Catholic ...

- current affairs
While the government shutdown in the United States and a risk of default send shivers through the global economy, recent figures in Hungary continue to encourage cautious optimism, building on positive indicators I reported last month. Indeed, the government has drawn up budgets for 2014 based on a GDP growth estimate of 2 percent. That is 0.6% lower than what Bank of America Merrill Lynch ...

It’s time to talk again about one of my hobby horses, foreign language teaching in Hungary. Faithful readers of this blog will undoubtedly recall how often we talked about the shortcomings of the system. Everybody has horror stories about learning a foreign language in Hungary. Although there are some schools that excel in teaching foreign languages, most students leave grade 12 without a working ...

Hungarian Government’s View On The European Commission’s Decision
- 26 Jun 2013 9:00 AM
- current affairs
The Government accepts the decision of the European Commission with regret, as it endangers the funding of the Erzsébet programme, which finances a Government welfare scheme, and imperils the funding of the scheme that stimulates the domestic tourism sector via the SZÉP (Széchenyi Recreation) Card.

A company announcement explained the shutdown was due to the airline being unable to finance advance payments to its service partners who had “lost trust” in the Hungarian national carrier.
