Xpat Event Report: Helmut Newton Exhibition In Budapest
When you are going to a Helmut Newton exhibition, you expect to be surprised, shocked and challenged. Well, this is something I did not find when I went to “The Museum of Fine Arts”, where the three photographic series are exhibited, that are built on the summary works titled Helmut Newton’s “Illustrated”, “Private Property” and “Gun for Hire”. Although Helmut Newton was born in Berlin, it transpires that his nationality was German/Australian.

This could, to some extent, explain his style: a mixture of German precision and Australian spirit. So the exhibition is not so much in your face or threatening, but shows an artist who had the imagination to take ideas, and take them further than the norm, producing exciting images. Yes, there is a fair sprinkling of naughty bits, but that is not what it is about.

It is about someone, who was at the top of his profession for many years, working for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace and Vogue. He was one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century, and his provocative style transformed fashion photography. For me, he was ahead of his time and still inspires many today.
