Goodfriend: Civil Society Indispensable For Democracy
A functioning civil society is indispensable for democracy, American chargé d’affairs, André Goodfriend, said at a conversation series Diplomacy and Beyond organised by the Dialogue Institute.

Goodfriend quoted President Barack Obama’s speech in New York at the end of September in which he said that Hungary and Egypt were countries that intimidate civil society.

The US diplomat said that all principles such as transparency, rule of law, good governance and a functioning civil society - about which dialogue is taking place between the American and Hungarian governments - are not principles of the United States alone but shared values.
