Szijjártó: Threats To Suspend EU Funds For Hungary “Dishonest”
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has said that it was “extremely hypocritical and dishonest” of certain “western politicians” to be making threats to suspend European Union funds for Hungary “while the country is trying to find a solution to one of the union’s biggest challenges”. The minister said the concept of open borders within Europe does not equate to “unlimited rights to cross borders illegally”.

He said Hungary had met all EU requirements and that it was “very strange” that the country is being criticised for “fully complying with” the Schengen and Dublin rules.

Although Hungary keeps to all international regulations when it comes to looking after migrants, it was “obvious that a number of migrants have become more aggressive” and are refusing to cooperate with Hungarian authorities “after having misunderstood certain comments from the West”.

Szijjártó said Hungary would continue to observe all EU regulations and maintains the stance that “the European championship of hypocrisy must end,” adding that proper measures are needed to resolve the migrant crisis, with border protection being the most important.

On Monday German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel called on Hungary to improve conditions in which refugees are accommodated.

He warned that EU funding could be jeopardised if member states did not do their fair share to handle the crisis.
