British Literary Translator Len Rix Gets Hungarian State Award
British literary translator Len Rix was presented with the Hungarian Golden Cross of Merit in London on Monday for his work in translating Hungarian literary classics into English.

Rix was presented the award by Ferenc Kumin, Hungary’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. In his laudation, Kumin said Rix had decided to learn the Hungarian language after hearing one of his acquaintances speak Hungarian.

Rix learned the language by himself using textbooks, audio recordings and literary works.

Rix’s translations include classic novels like Antal Szerb’s Journey by Moonlight and Magda Szabó’s The Door, the latter of which was included in The New York Times’ top ten list of books in 2015.
