World Water Day Marked by Hungarian President
It is not too late to save Earth, but people must change their everyday habits in order to protect the environment, President János Áder said, marking World Water Day on Tuesday.

The importance of water should not be forgotten even during times of war, he said at a lecture at the II Rákóczi Ferenc secondary school.

Environmental challenges will not ease, and food and energy supplies could become strained unless changes are made in the near future, he added.

Áder said that despite the pandemic coming to an end, the price of electricity, gas, oil and coal have been rapidly increasing, with inflation hitting a thirty-year record worldwide.

There has been a surge in starvation, and despite the narrowing of resources, global consumption exceeded the Earth’s resources by 1.7 times, he added.

The significant drop in grain production resulting from the Russia-Ukraine conflict could have a serious effect already in the short term, with the United Nations having purchased 85% of grains supplied to refugees from these two countries in the past, he said.

Decision-makers must fulfil their promises, but even ordinary people can contribute to change by avoiding unnecessary purchases, cutting back on food waste and reducing consumption which burdens the environment, Áder said.
