Gov’t Clears Way for Drilling in Hungary's Protected Areas
The government has designated hydrocarbon mining – specifically oil and gas extraction – as a matter of “paramount public interest”, even in ecologically sensitive zones, according to Decree 208/2025 published.

Previously, only the protection of human life and health, the maintenance of public security, or the achievement of significant environmental benefits were considered overriding public interests that justified drilling in these zones.

With this decree, in effect from July 20, the government has added energy supply via domestic fossil fuel production to that list.
