Updated: Budapest Airport Open Again - After Halting Arrivals & Departures Due to Icy Weather
Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International reopened in the afternoon on Tuesday, after closing in the morning because of bad weather, operator Budapest Airport said. Budapest Airport said some flights could still be delayed or cancelled.

Arriving and departing flights had been temporarily halted from 10:25 due to black ice and extreme icing. Several other airports in Central Europe also closed temporarily because of the weather.

At a press conference at Liszt Ferenc, Budapest Airport's deputy-CEO for corporate communications and government relations Katalin Valentinyi said eight Budapest flights had been rerouted and five cancelled.

Due to the airport closure, a total of 13 arriving and 14 departing flights were cancelled, and as a result of the extreme weather conditions, 11 flights were diverted to other airports.

During the morning, the nose gear of Ethiopian Airlines cargo flight ETH3707 slipped off the paved surface of a taxiway, onto grass while taxiing, causing the aircraft to become stuck. No injuries were reported. The circumstances of the incident are currently under investigation.

The airport operator, in cooperation with the competent authorities, has freed the aircraft and towed it to a stand.

Snow and black ice was detected at Ferenc Liszt International Airport and its surroundings from early Tuesday morning until the early afternoon, 13 January.

The airport is currently on the highest level of preparedness for snow. Budapest Airport’s teams are working hard to continuously clear the runways, taxiways and aprons.

Budapest Airport continuously provides updates on conditions at the airport. Passengers are requested to monitor the airport’s website and the airlines’ announcements for the latest information on their flights.
