Did You Know: HUF 100k Fine If You Don’t Clear Snow from Path by Home
- 6 Jan 2026 11:19 AM
The national weather service has issued alerts for the entire country due to expected snow and freezing rain in early January. Clearing sidewalks and areas in front of homes is especially crucial, as some areas could see up to 30 cm of snow. Authorities urge residents to remove snow and apply anti-slip treatments promptly.
Who Is Responsible for Clearing Sidewalks?
Property owners are primarily responsible for clearing and de-icing sidewalks in front of their buildings. Under current rules, owners must ensure these public areas are safe. Failing to do so can lead to fines from local councils ranging from 5,000–50,000 HUF (€13–€130); repeated or severe cases can hit 100,000 HUF (€260).
Serious Consequences Possible
If someone slips and gets injured on an untreated sidewalk, the property owner could face civil liability — including covering medical costs. Court cases have arisen from such incidents.
What Exactly Needs Clearing?
• The full width of the sidewalk
• In areas without sidewalks, a 1-meter strip in front of the property
• The verge right up to the roadway
• Drainage ditches
• Animal waste
Material use
Avoid environmentally harmful substances like excessive salt on sidewalks, as they can damage vegetation and paving. Opt for eco-friendly alternatives such as sand, sawdust, or ash for de-icing.
Timing requirement
Clearing must begin immediately after snowfall stops, to the extent necessary.
Check Local Rules
Towns and cities may have additional regulations, so check your local council's website. The goal everywhere is safe, accident-free travel during winter.
