Road Accidents Triple Here Due to Snow - Public Asked Not to Use Bikes & Scooters
The number of road accidents has nearly tripled during the snowfall on Monday, the head of the national police's traffic department told a press conference held at the memorial of victims of road accidents in Budapest.

Colonel Jozsef Oberling said that while most of the accidents on Monday brought "damage to property only", a cyclist travelling without head protection died onsite when he fell and hit his head.

Oberling asked the public to suspend using bicycles, scooters and electric scooters in the coming days, even on seemingly dry roads. Motorists should only use their cars with winter tires, drive more slowly and leave greater distance to other vehicles than usual, he added.

Disaster management forces are ready to assist anyone in trouble, he said.

Operative board: Road maintenance crews, disaster management, emergency services, authorities working at full capacity due to snowfall

Electricity, gas, water and waste collection services are operating normally, there are no disruptions anywhere, no settlements are cut off in the country and no roads are closed, the spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Directorate (OKF) said.

Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Mukics told a press conference that the operative board had held its first meeting in the morning, led by Interior Minister Sandor Pinter.

According to weather forecasts, the extreme winter weather will continue for a few more days, with temperatures possibly dropping to minus 15 degrees Celsius, and up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow falling in the southern part of the country from Tuesday afternoon, he said.

He said that no settlements in the country were cut off and no roads were closed. He added that there were no power outages anywhere, although on Monday there had been brief power cuts at 475 consumption points, typically due to broken branches and fallen trees.

In Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg county, in northeast Hungary, power had been cut off for a few hours at 30 consumption points due to a car colliding with an electricity pole, he said.

He said that more than a thousand employees of service providers were on standby to deal with possible supply disruptions, assisted by firefighters when necessary. If a settlement becomes inaccessible by road due to snowfall, the emergency services will take care of the residents there and, if necessary, provide them with medical care, Mukics added.

He also said that teaching in public education institutions had been uninterrupted everywhere, with only one school reporting a heating problem in one classroom.

Homeless care is also running smoothly, and no one has to spend the night on the streets even in the prolonged cold, he said.
