Renewables Supply More Than Half of Hungary’s Electricity Recently

Renewables and biofuels together provided 50.3% of the electricity generated in Hungary during the month, while solar photovoltaic generation alone accounted for 44.7%. The figures underline the increasingly important role of solar power in the country’s electricity mix.
The July result is particularly significant because the contribution from solar generation can vary substantially according to the season and weather conditions. Hungary has expanded its solar generation capacity rapidly in recent years, allowing photovoltaic power to make up an increasingly large proportion of domestic electricity production during periods of strong sunlight.
Longer-term European data also highlight the scale of Hungary’s growth in solar electricity. In 2024, solar power accounted for 24% of Hungary’s electricity production, placing the country among the EU leaders for the share of electricity generated from solar.
The latest monthly figures put Hungary well ahead of several neighbouring countries. Renewables accounted for 20.9% of electricity generation in Czechia and 18.1% in Slovakia in July. Poland recorded a 39.0% share in June, the latest month available for that country.
Renewable electricity is also continuing to expand across Europe. In the second quarter of 2026, renewable sources accounted for 54.1% of electricity generated across the EU. Solar was the largest renewable contributor, representing 41.6% of renewable electricity, followed by wind at 27.7% and hydropower at 22.6%.
Hungary’s July figure relates specifically to electricity generation rather than the share of renewables in the country’s overall energy consumption. The broader energy system also includes transport, heating and other forms of energy use.
The strong summer performance nevertheless illustrates how dramatically solar power has changed Hungary’s electricity landscape. During periods of high solar production, photovoltaic generation can now provide a very substantial proportion of the electricity produced in the country, helping renewable sources collectively exceed half of monthly generation.
