Quick Biz Insights: PMI Slips, How Many Companies in Hungary Plan New Hires
Hungary's seasonally-adjusted Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) stood at 49.3 points in January, falling from 54.0 in the previous month, the Hungarian Association of Logistics, Purchasing and Inventory Management (Halpim) said.

The PMI was below the 50-point threshold, signalling a contraction in the manufacturing sector.

Among the PMI sub-indices, the new orders index dropped 6.6pp but was still over the 50-point mark.

The production volume index slipped 5.7pp and indicated a decline.

The employment index fell 2.6pp and was under the 50 threshold.

The delivery times index edged up 0.5pp but was below the 50-point mark.

The gauge of purchased inventories was down 6.1pp but still showed an expansion.

Around one-fourth of companies plan new hires - Randstad

Around 26pc of companies in Hungary plan to raise headcount in 2026, a survey of more than 430 executives by staffing company Randstad shows.

Just 12pc plan layoffs, 17pc aim to reduce headcount through natural attrition and 45pc want to keep the number of people on payroll steady.

Around 97pc of companies plan pay rises, most between 6pc and 8pc.

About 44pc of companies expect their revenue to grow in 2026 and and 10pc augur a decline.

Govt launches programme to support new hires at SMEs

The state secretary for employment policy on Tuesday announced the launch of a HUF 4bn programme to support new hires at SMEs.
 

Businesses may apply for up to HUF 2.5m per new hire to cover payroll costs over six months, Sandor Czomba said. As much as 30pc of the support may be used for the acquisition of assets, he added.
