Free Cash Withdrawal Maximum Rises

The monthly limit for free cash withdrawals has risen to Ft 300,000, up from Ft 150,000, effective 1 February. Retail clients may take up to Ft 300,000 in cash from a single bank account in up to two withdrawals a month. Any further withdrawals will be subject to the financial transaction tax.
Recent legislation also requires financial institutions to maintain and install ATMs across smaller towns and villages, aiming to ensure cash availability nationwide - a significant move for those living outside Budapest and major cities.
While the free withdrawal limit has doubled, discussions continue around broader banking costs in Hungary, including how banks pass on taxes and charges to customers.
Even with the spread of electronic payments, cash remains a basic means of payment, making access to cash the basis for the financial sovereignty of the Hungarian people, the ministry said, noting that the government remains committed to ensuring that there are ATMs in every settlement.
