Gauguin Exhibition in Budapest to Showcase 150 Masterworks
Opening on 28 October, it runs until 28 February 2027. Paul Gauguin’s search for new forms of artistic expression will take centre stage at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest this autumn and winter, with a major exhibition bringing together around 150 works from leading museums and collections around the world.

"Bonjour Monsieur Gauguin! – The Circles of the Post-Impressionists and Symbolists" exhibition features around 80 works by Gauguin alongside paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by artists who influenced him or shared the artistic debates of his time.

The international scale of the exhibition is reflected in the number of institutions lending works to Budapest.  Together, these loans help showcase around 150 related art works to Budapest, including the 80 or so by Gauguin and around 70 by other artists from his circle and era.

Almost 40 museums and collections are involved, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Tate in London and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.

Rather than presenting Gauguin in isolation, the exhibition places his work within the wider artistic and intellectual circles that shaped the development of late 19th-century modern art.

Therefore visitors will encounter works by artists including Gustave Courbet, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Émile Bernard and Paul Sérusier.

The display follows Gauguin’s artistic journey and his search for new ways of representing the world, from his early development and connections with other artists through to the distinctive style associated with his later work. Paintings are presented alongside works on paper and sculpture, offering a broader view of his career and artistic experimentation.

The exhibition continues the Museum of Fine Arts’ long-running series of major presentations devoted to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, following earlier exhibitions dedicated to artists including Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Renoir. The series has combined international loans with a strong art-historical framework designed to place the individual artists within their wider artistic context.

Curated by Judit Geskó, the exhibition is part of the Museum of Fine Arts’ programme marking its 120th anniversary and is expected to be one of the major international art exhibitions in Budapest during the 2026–27 season.
