Methodist Church in Hungary Regains Registered Status
The Metropolitan Court of Budapest has officially registered the Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship (MET) as a church again, the MET announced.

The MET, led by pastor Gabor Ivanyi, noted that it was first granted registered church status in 2022, but the prosecutor’s office launched a procedure to overturn the ruling. In December 2024, the Kuria, Hungary’s supreme court, overturned the decisions of the Metropolitan Court and the Metropolitan Court of Appeal, leading to the MET being given the status of listed church again.

Last October, the MET reapplied for registered church status, but both the Metropolitan Court and the Metropolitan Court of Appeal rejected the request.

The MET submitted another application this past March. After a lengthy legal battle, a first-instance court ruled in favour of the MET in July. As the prosecutor’s office did not appeal, the ruling became legally binding on Sept 7, the MET said in its statement.

Registered churches and listed churches are separate legal categories, with the former entitled to greater state support, the statement added.
