Fewer than 100,000 signatures were collected for a national referendum initiative on making Dec 24 a public holiday, organised by the commercial employees' union KASZ, the National Election Committee said on Tuesday.

Háry János Turns 100 – Kodály's Masterpiece at the Hungarian State Opera

To mark the centenary of its world premiere, Attila Béres stages Zoltán Kodály’s Háry János at the Hungarian State Opera. The production, starring Csaba Sándor and Gabriella Balga, is conducted by Péter Halász, while the spoken roles are performed by András Csonka and András Rusznák. The anniversary performance is presented seven times between 17 and 25 October 2026, while the dress rehearsal on 16 October is open to secondary school students as part of MVM OperAdventure.

The Irish novelist Colm Toibin received the Budapest Grand Prize at the opening of the 31st Budapest International Book Festival on Thursday, an honour with a personal resonance: it was in Budapest, in a hotel room by the Eastern Railway Station, that he wrote his second novel in 1990.
