Frederick Sweet was born in New York City of Hungarian parents (both from Budapest) who had immigrated to the United States before World War II. Since Hungarian was spoken at home, Sweet acquired it as a second language.

He graduated from Liverpool University and became a management accountant with Unilever in the London HQ. Early work involved supporting and accounting for many of Unilever's subsidiaries outside Europe and the US. In 1985 he was posted to Kenya as Commercial Manager for the joint venture growing sunflower and oilseed rape.
