In Hungary a key element of celebrating Christmas is the traditional custom of the Bethlehem Shepherd’s play (betlehemes játék). The present-day version of the Bethlehem folk play originates from the 19th-20th century, although it may date back as far as the medieval times.
Renoir Exhibition Budapest Attracts 200,000

On display until 21 January 2024. The Painter and His Models, an exhibition of Renoir’s works in Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts, has attracted some 200,000 visitors since opening in September, the museum said.

"Named after the Christian virgin, St. Lucy's day (Lucia or Luca’s day - luca napja) is one of the richest in customs and superstitions in Hungary. Before the Gregorian calendar reform, it was the shortest and darkest day of the year, and it marked the beginning of the winter solstice. It is for this reason that numerous traditions and fertility games are linked to this special day.

The painting entitled Woman with a Birdcage was created in two versions by József Rippl-Rónai, the first of which will now be sold at an auction on December 17 for HUF 180 million (EUR 473,840), reports Magyar Nemzet. Such a high starting price has never been seen at a Hungarian art auction.

Philosopher Mihály Vajda died on Monday at the age of 88, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences said on Tuesday. Vajda was born in 1935 in Budapest and graduated from Eötvös Loránd University in philosophy in 1958 and then in German language and literature two years later.
