Brussels Takes Hungary To Court Over Energy Legislation

The European Commission has referred Hungary to the European Court of Justice for failure to transpose EU law into its legislation on energy efficiency, the Commission said. The move will take an infringement procedure launched against Hungary earlier to the third, litigation stage. Brussels has asked the court to impose a fine of 15,444 euros per day until the breach is stopped.

No decision has been made on whether to introduce a congestion charge in Budapest, the city’s mayor said at a session of the municipal assembly. István Tarlós said no decision had been made concerning either the extent of the zone or the fee. He said efforts were being made in Brussels to “fend off” any requirement to introduce a congestion charge.

The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation to determine whether Hungary’s tax on advertisements complied with European Union rules on state aid. The EC expressed concerns that the progressive tax “could selectively favour certain companies and give them an unfair competitive advantage”.
