Árpád Göncz, Hungary’s first postcommunist president who held office between 1990 and 2000, has died at the age of 93. Parliament observed a minute of silence, while the government paid tribute to Göncz in a statement of condolences, saying that as the first head of state of a free democratic Hungary, Göncz had “served his ten years in office to the best of his ability”.

In future churches should be registered by courts based on legal provisions, according to a consultation paper on the church law published online on kormany.hu. The law in effect since January 1, 2012 originally recognised only 14 congregations as established churches but allowed other faiths to apply to parliament for recognition, dependent on the vote of a two-thirds majority.

Report: Balaton Sound Festival In Hungary A Success

This year’s MasterCard Balaton Sound attracted the same record number of visitors as it did last year. A total of 145 000 fans from almost 60 countries came together to celebrate at the sunny shores of Lake Balaton. The festival even had a sold-out day on Saturday, when more than 35 000 visitors enjoyed Faithless and Afrojack.
Balaton Sound Successfully Entertaining Many Foreigners Again

Organisers expect a total of 140-150,000 visitors to attend this year’s Balaton Sound music festival in western Hungary, they said on Wednesday, the event’s first day of five. The festival is highly popular among foreigners, 60-70% of whom come from Belgium and the Netherlands, followed by festival-goers from Austria, Slovakia, Germany, Britain and Italy.
