‘Õrség’area (Guardsmen’s Land), the former frontier is the only region in Hungary today which has been continuously inhabited by the same people since the time of ‘Honfoglalás’ (Conquest of the fatherland), time of the occupation of the Carpathian Basin by the Magyars in the 9th century.

This former puszta settlement is best known today for a huge memorial exhibition on local history. The National Heritage Park here was established in 1982, and is an exceptional open-air museum about all things Hungarian.

By Anne Zwack: There are people who have been living all their lives in Budapest who have never even been to the Csepel Island. The reasons for this are obscure as the centre of Csepel is ten minutes drive from the Palace of Arts. The island was the first stopping place for the invading Magyars and is called Csepel after Arpad’s groom.
