Prime Minister Viktor Orbán yesterday rejected a Socialist MP’s suggestion that the VAT on staple foods be reduced. Socialist Zoltán Gõgös urged a reduction in the VAT in Parliament Monday afternoon, saying people are going hungry and the present system encourages them to cheat.

According to the agreement reached late on Wednesday, local retail customers can expect to pay 10% more on average for natural gas as of 1 April. An official announcement is expected to be made soon.
