One in three Hungarians (3.3 million) are now living in poverty while the average citizen has just HUF 522 (USD 2.19) per day for food and that amount is falling, according to a recent Eurostat report. Statistics released recently by NAV, the Hungarian Tax and Financial Control Administration, show that sales of cigarette are significantly falling, Népszabadság reported last Friday. According to the NAV figures published by this national newspaper, 623 million cigarettes were sold in July, around 40% fewer than in June 2013 when new regulations on tobacco retail came into effect.
