Analysis: Population of Hungary Set to Shrink to Eight Million By 2070, According To Official Forecast
The population of Hungary will dip below eight million by 2070, according to forecasts drawn up by the Central Statistics Office.

Hungary’s population has dwindled from 10,709,000 in 1981 to 9,597,000 by January 1, 2023.

In its forecast for 2070, the Office sees the population of Budapest falling by the lowest extent, by about 100,000, a decline of 6.3%.

The highest shrinkage of the population, of at least 30%, is expected in Baranya, Somogy and Tolna counties, as well as Zala and Békés, which showed the worst results in the most recent census, while the drop could be 25-30% in Bács, Heves, Nógrád, Vas and Veszprém counties.

As the population is aging, the proportion of those aged 0-14 is expected to drop by 0.6% by 2070, while the proportion of those aged at least 65 will rise by 6.1%.

The highest percentages of elderly people are expected in Zala (31.7%), Budapest (31.1%), Vas (29.5%) and Győr counties (28%).

The proportion of those younger than 14 is expected to be the highest in Hajdú, Borsod and Szabolcs counties (16-18%) in 2070.
