The government will insist on rules which prevent work on Sundays, the government spokesman told public TV. Zoltán Kovács responded to recent press reports that an outlet of the Hungarian supermarket chain CBA near Lake Balaton had arranged with the local council to be declared a market, allowing opening for business on Sundays.

Thanks to government mandated cuts to utility fees, Hungary has the second lowest price of natural gas in the European Union based on purchasing power parity (PPP), Fidesz MP Szilárd Németh told a press conference in Budapest. Whereas in 2010 Hungary was the country where consumers had to pay the most for gas in the EU, now only Romania has lower gas prices, based on PPP exchange rates.

After two years of operation, luxury clothing shop Il Bacio di Stile will close down on July 31, its owner company Dolcer has announced. The shop on Andrássy út in Budapest’s Sixth District was loss-making due to high costs and lower spending by tourists, Dolcer added. The bulk purchasing price of milk was 100 forints per litre a year ago but earlier agreed contractual prices have fallen to 75-77 per litre and spot market prices are as low as 72-73 forints per litre, business daily Világgazdaság reported. Production costs for most range between 95- 98 forints per litre according to the paper and only subsidies are keeping many producers from going bankrupt.

Online retailers have registered accelerated growth since the ban on Sunday shopping came into force on March 15, according to a survey by GKI Digital and Árukereso.hu. In the first quarter, retail sales were up 16% year-on-year at Ft 30 billion. Tesco posted an annual 85% rise in online sales between March and May.
