It now seems like ages ago, but once upon a time, believe it or not, it was safe to go for a swim in the Danube in downtown Budapest. But the river fell victim to poor communist urban planning, and the “Blue Danube” pre-1990 became nothing more than a terribly polluted north-south highway.

Homelessness in Hungary is back in the news. Recently, the municipal government of Budapest approved a local ordinance that prohibits so-called “habitual living” in certain designated areas of the capital – mostly Budapest’s world heritage sites and parts of downtown.

Although Hungarian youth are more optimistic about their opportunities for self-expression, they are still pessimistic about financial stability and their separateness. According a K&H survey, young people are slightly more positive regarding their job opportunities than they were a couple of months ago but they are still insecure about issues related to their separateness.
