Verdi’s opera The Sicilian Vespers was premiered on June 13th 1855 and at the time, was only a modest success. Humperdink’s love scene was written for a stage production of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice. Respighi’s best known symphonic poems sing of the Italian capital’s glorious past and present.
