Three-Billion-Forint Investment Elevates Gyula Castle Bath
The Gyula Castle Bath in south-eastern Hungary has completed a comprehensive HUF 3 billion renovation project, marking the conclusion of a multi-phase development programme aimed at strengthening the town’s position as one of Hungary’s leading spa destinations.

The final stage of the investment was officially inaugurated on 17 February 2026, with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjártó, Mayor Ernő Görgényi and Deputy Mayor István Kónya in attendance.

The ceremony marked the reopening of a renovated pool complex and the restored Riding Stable building, originally constructed nearly 200 years ago.

With the handover of the historic stable structure, the entire Castle Bath complex is now fully open to visitors following its modernisation.

A Leading Thermal Destination

Speaking at the event, Szijjártó described the Castle Bath as one of Hungary’s “best and most beautiful” thermal spas. He highlighted that recent developments in Gyula — a town located near the Romanian border — are expected to attract increasing numbers of domestic and international tourists.

Among the most significant complementary investments is the HUF 2.5 billion renovation of the Almásy Mansion, a key cultural landmark that further enhances Gyula’s tourism portfolio.

Gyula: A Historic Border Town

Gyula is one of Hungary’s most picturesque historic towns, known for its well-preserved medieval brick fortress, the Gyula Castle, which dates back to the 15th century. The castle is one of Central Europe’s few surviving Gothic brick fortresses and plays a central role in the town’s cultural identity.

Beyond tourism, Gyula has strengthened its economic profile in recent years. Szijjártó noted that the establishment of a manufacturing facility by Airbus has integrated the town more deeply into the global economy. Infrastructure improvements, including the planned connection of the M44 expressway to Romania’s motorway network, are expected to enhance Gyula’s role as a logistics and trade gateway.

The History of Gyula Castle Bath

The Castle Bath’s origins date back to 1959, when thermal water was discovered in the park surrounding Almásy Castle. The spa was subsequently developed within the castle park, uniquely combining historic architecture with modern wellness infrastructure.

Over the decades, the bath has evolved into one of Hungary’s most prominent spa complexes, offering thermal pools, wellness facilities, medical treatments and family attractions. Its thermal water, rich in minerals, is particularly valued for therapeutic purposes, especially in treating musculoskeletal conditions.

The spa’s distinctive character lies in its setting: visitors can relax in thermal pools beneath centuries-old trees in the castle park, with views of the nearby medieval fortress. The newly renovated Riding Stable building further enhances this historic atmosphere, blending 19th-century architectural heritage with contemporary spa design.

A Boost for Regional Tourism

The HUF 3 billion upgrade included the renovation of indoor and outdoor pool areas, modernisation of infrastructure, and restoration of historic structures within the complex. The investment not only preserves cultural heritage but also strengthens Gyula’s competitiveness in Hungary’s dynamic health and wellness tourism sector.

With the completion of the final phase, Gyula Castle Bath is poised to attract even more visitors, reinforcing the town’s dual identity as both a historic cultural centre and a modern thermal spa destination.
