Strengthening Hungarian-Bulgarian Ties on Historic Liberation Day
- 4 Mar 2026 5:08 AM
State Secretary for Church and Ethnic Relations Miklos Soltesz said that the world was currently being rehaped, and at such times, "we must pay attention to living in peace with each other in the Balkans and central and eastern Europe".
"A spark can ignite a flame in an instant," he said, adding "we have already experienced the destruction this can cause."
Soltesz said that today's celebration of Bulgaria's liberation also served as a warning, cautioning that peoples living side by side must respect and appreciate each other.
"We Hungarians, on behalf of the Hungarian government, have not only extended a friendly hand to the Bulgarian community and Bulgaria, but we are friends," he said, recalling that on March 3, 1878, Bulgaria was liberated from Ottoman-Turkish rule after nearly five hundred years of oppression.
