Only Two Local Taxi Firms Survive in Budapest as Uber & Bolt Control 70% of Market
- 9 Mar 2026 7:12 AM
According to a recent report by Telex, the rapid ascent of Bolt and Uber has left long-standing local taxi firms struggling to survive, with several already pushed to the brink of collapse.
The Decline of Traditional Fleets
Established Hungarian brands like 6x6 Taxi and Taxi 4 have seen their driver numbers plummet below the critical threshold required for sustainable operations (typically between 170 and 270 vehicles).
The financial impact has been severe: 6x6 Taxi reported losses of HUF 160 million in the first seven months of last year, while Taxi 4 saw losses exceeding HUF 15 million in 2025.
The Rise of the "Big Two"
In contrast, the growth of international platforms has been aggressive:
* Bolt: Expanded its fleet from 900 cars in 2019 to over 3,000 today.
* Uber: Since re-entering the market in 2024, it has quickly amassed 2,500 registered drivers, many of whom were recruited directly from local competitors.
Combined, these two giants operate between 4,500 and 5,000 vehicles in a city where the total taxi fleet hovers around 6,500 to 7,000 cars.
A Consolidating Market
Currently, only two major Hungarian players remain significant: Főtaxi (with 1,300–1,500 cars) and City Taxi (with 650–700 cars).
The market has effectively consolidated into a three-pole structure dominated by the two global apps and one large domestic operator. The next phase of competition is expected to center on the corporate sector, as Uber and Bolt look to lure business clients away from the traditional dispatch-based firms.
