'Harmonia Jazz Workshop', Budapest Jazz Club, 24 September
- 23 Sep 2010 2:40 AM
Evoking East-European Jewish traditions is not so unusual in the American jazz sphere: think about John Zorn and musicians of Tzadik records. In Europe, Nigun is the only follower of this line, the roots of which are found both in Jewish sprituality and today's jazz. Tradition and modernity, set forms and improvsation, tranquility and vibration are all contrasts completing each other.
These characterise the music of Nigun while the Hassidic and Hungarian cultural traditions blend into a new and exciting fusion. The anchor of Nigun remains from the earliest days bassist PETER NAGY, while drummer GYORGY JESZENSZKY is a fantastic all-rounder who crops up in the most diverse formations ranging from ethno-jazz through hard-bop right to the outer reaches of the avant-garde. At the Viktor Toth Tercette’s London gig he proved once more his fantastic sense of dynamics.
