Contactless Payment Rolled Out Across All Budapest Metro Lines
Contactless payment terminals began operating across all metro lines in Budapest on Wednesday, marking a major step forward in modernising the capital’s public transport system.

Passengers can now purchase and validate tickets at the entrance of every metro station using the Pay&GO system, enabling quick, tap-and-go access without the need for paper tickets or machines.

At a press conference held at Rákóczi Square station on the M4 line, Mayor Gergely Karácsony said expanding Pay&GO is part of a broader effort to make public transport “far more attractive” than travelling by car.

The system had already been introduced on the 100E airport shuttle and the M1 metro line, and is now available network-wide underground.

According to Budapest Transport Centre (BKK), the new system allows passengers to buy and validate a single ticket with one simple contactless tap using a bank card or mobile device. The goal is to streamline travel, reduce queues, and align Budapest with other major European cities offering similar smart ticketing solutions.

Looking ahead, Karácsony confirmed that contactless payment will be extended to all public transport vehicles in the capital by 2028.

More details are available via BKK’s official announcement.

In recent years, the Budapest Municipality has prioritised the development of long-term plans and strategies in several areas of transport. However, urban road traffic has largely been left out. The road network plan amounts to little more than a single diagram, while a comprehensive parking strategy has yet to be produced, despite repeated requests and official responses acknowledging the issue.
