New HUF 300 Billion EU Funded Projects in Budapest Outlined by Mayor
Plans to have the next cabinet unlock frozen EU funds have been welcomed by Gergely Karácsony, mayor of Budapest, who has prepared a list of projects that could run through to 2029.

The plans envisage around Ft 300 billion in development funding, with the city and its companies expected to receive roughly 18% of that total.

Under the plan, Ft 178 billion would be allocated to transport, Ft 50 billion to public spaces, Ft 38 billion to flood protection and water management, and Ft 34 billion to housing and social projects.

Among transport priorities, Karácsony highlighted extension of the tramlines south of the Gellért Hotel.

Other plans include a full overhaul of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út, incorporating cycling infrastructure and broader urban redesign, alongside the removal of the Nyugati tér overpass and upgrades to Lehel tér.

Transport spending would focus heavily on tram infrastructure, alongside investments in trolleybuses, electric buses and cycling networks, including the EuroVelo routes.
