Prosecutor General To Be Named In Hungary
"Peter Polt is the favourite to be elected as the next prosecutor general, MTI writes, citing press reports. Polt held the post from 2000-06. President Pal Schmitt is expected to hold talks with Polt, incumbent Tamas Kovacs and another former prosecutor general Kalman Gyorgyi today, Nepszabadsag reports. Schmitt will then brief Speaker Laszlo Kover.

The heads of the parliamentary parties held consultations with Schmitt on Wednesday but no names were mentioned. Kovacs will leave on December 13, after reaching 70 years of age.

Fidesz deputy caucus leader Istvan Balsai and Christian Democrat caucus leader Peter Harrach said they will field a joint candidate.

Socialist caucus leader Attila Mesterhazy commented that his party will not take part in the “pseudo-democratic puppet show” nomination process.

Jobbik caucus leader Gabor Vona said his party favours seeing someone who has not been a party member in the last 20 years.

Politics Can Be Different (LMP) caucus leader Andras Schiffer said his party expects Schmitt to nominate someone “with unquestionable impartiality”.
