Temu to Pay Fine & Compensation to Consumers in Hungary
Whaleco Technology, the European operator of Chinese-owned online marketplace Temu, has cooperated in a probe launched by the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) and agreed to pay consumers at least HUF 882m in refunds, while ceasing practices to which the watchdog objected.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, GVH said Temu's European operator had cooperated for the full course of the probe and waived its right of appeal.

GVH had launched the probe after its experts assessed a number reports regarding the e-commerce platform.

Messages on Temu urging consumers to "hurry up" with their purchases because a limited number of the products were left, or touting products rated "five stars" by earlier buyers was likely a form of "psychological pressure", while promises of discounts of "as much as 95pc" could be misleading, GVH said at the time.

In addition to adopting a consumer protection compliance programme, Temu's European operator will pay Hungarian consumers who made purchases on the platform between November 2023 and September 2024 each HUF 2,000 cash compensation.

Whaleco will also pay a HUF 437m fine.
