Hungarian Cabinet To Help Those In Dire Poverty
"The cabinet has set itself the goal of helping 500,000 people living in deep poverty via its Europa 2020 strategy, Economy Ministry state secretary Zoltan Csefalvay told on a conference in Budapest. He said 28.3% of the population, about 3 million people, live in poverty in Hungary, and that this percentage is to be reduced to 23.5%.

National Resources Minister Miklos Rethelyi said a survey found that 84% of Hungarians feel that their monthly income is less than what is necessary for them to make a living.

The government is committed to handling poverty through economic growth and employment, he confirmed.

EU affairs state secretary Eniko Gyori drew attention to the need to draw up a Roma strategy and to curb child poverty.

Hungary is last in employment among EU member states with a 10.1% unemployment rate, said employment policy state secretary Sandor Czomba. He announced that companies and churches that employ jobless people will be eligible for extra subsidies from January."
