84% See Worsening Situation In Hungary
"A whopping 84% of Hungarians believe the country is going in the wrong direction, according to a new poll by Ipsos. A smaller majority, 57%, did not express a preference for any political party, outnumbering the 43% who did. The poll showed that only 16% of the population supports Fidesz, down from 18% in December. The Socialists had 11% overall support, Jobbik 8% and LMP 4%.

Among those expressing a party preference, Fidesz support was unchanged at 39% while that for the Socialists rose from 24% to 26% and Jobbik’s fell from 24% to 22%. LMP support inched up from 8% to 9%, while 3% favour the Democratic Coalition.

Voters have a “devastating opinion” of the performance of both the government and the opposition, assessing their work at 19 points on a scale of 100.

Support for Jobbik is almost as strong as that for Fidesz among those in their twenties and early thirties. In this group Fidesz has 18% support and Jobbik 15%.

The Socialists lead among the retired, favoured by 25% as against Fidesz’s 18%.

In a surprise result, former prime minister Gordon Bajnai is more popular than Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the former having a 28% approval rating to Orbán’s 27%. During the change of government in May 2010, Orbán enjoyed 53% approval and Bajnai 26%.

The survey of 1,500 people was conducted January 3-10."
