Merlin Theatre Goes To The Átrium Budapest In 2012
"Átrium is a beautiful art deco building, designed by Lajos Kozma, which has an aura that makes it a perfect place for creation. The place does not only awakes nostalgy of the 1930s, but also the 70s and 80s when it was known by the public as the Május 1 cinema.

In 2012 the place will reborn, get a new function and a new vocation. It will turn into a theatre, a café, a community place, where art meets entertainment and quality time spending, but the main desire of Átrium will be the theatre.

Átrium Film - Theatre
We are building a theatre which combines innovation with professionalism and puts it together into the international context. The 20 years old relationships of Merlin, the European and American collaborations will help us showing the most contemporary, new theatrical directions and successes in Budapest. ÁTRIUM will be an important place for international co-operations which will use the different areas of performing arts for creating new productions. Within this; the harmony of film, contemporary visual culture and the elements of theatre will be combined and be the decisive image of the theatre.

There are 16 govermental/locally subsidised theatres and more than 70 alternative theatres in Budapest, but non of them work as complex as the ÁTRIUM, which gives space to English language performances, international coproductions, screenings, educational programmes in theatre and drama, regular vocational talks, café in one location.

ÁTRIUM will be able to associate with all members of the theatrical community, because its existence is not limited by the tether of company-based structure. Hence we can choose the best from all variety, let that be creator or creation, govermental subsidised or independent, mainstream or alternative. Its independence guarantees that it will never have to suit any political or aesthetical expectaitons."

Address: 1023 Budapest Margit körút 55.
