Hungarian Caterers Wary Of New Smoking Ban
"The law banning smoking in all bars and restaurants, effective April 1, will not affect high-end restaurants, whereas small units and bars might see serious declines in income, according to honorary chairman Tamás Háber of small restaurant and pub association MVI.

Many will try to evade the ban on smoking by opening bars in homes and forming private clubs.

“This indicates the need for a more civilised solution than the present regulation,” Háber argued.

In any case, he continued, people will tend not to obey the law, and the police will not arrest those who smoke illegally.

The new law also bans smoking in workplaces, on public transport, at bus and tram stops, in underpasses, playgrounds and within five metres of bus stops and playgrounds.

Individuals can be fined up to Ft 50,000 and institutions up to Ft 2.5 million for violating the ban."
