Hungary's President Pál Schmitt Announces His Resignation
"Pál Schmitt has resigned as President of the Republic. He announced his resignation in a pre-agenda address in Parliament.

Mr. Schmitt said he had performed his duties fully, to the best of his ability and in accordance with Hungary's Fundamental Law. But he added that in the current situation the accusations of plagiarism made against him meant that his person was becoming a source of division in the nation, and so he would resign from the post.

He continued by saying that according to the Fundamental Law the President expresses the unity of the nation, saying: “To me this provision means that in the current situation, when a personal issue of mine is dividing rather than uniting my beloved nation, I feel obliged to bring my term of service to an end, and to resign from the post of President.”

Pál Schmitt concluded by saying, “I ask for God’s blessing on Hungary and on your work here.”

Parliament accepted President Pal Schmitt's resignation on Monday afternoon. Fidesz fraction leader János Lázár has announced earlier today a debate with the participation of each parliamentary group for tonight to discuss the nomination procedure of a new president."
