Autumn Debate On Waste Management In Hungary
Parliament will discuss a waste management bill in the fall, which is expected to generate heated debates, Napi Gazdasag writes. The government expects to generate Ft 85 billion revenue in 2013 in environmental product fees paid by waste managing companies, up Ft 25 billion from this year, state secretary Zoltan Illes said.

Under the proposed regulation, local governments will require at least a 51% stake in companies that operate landfills, squeezing other shareholders and businesses to minority ownership status.

The European Union earlier said it may look into the regulation as efforts to nationalise the sector have met resistance from companies. One-fifth of landfills are operated by foreign companies, which according to Illes repatriate their profits from this multi-billion forint business.
