Activists Turn To Strasbourg As Hungary Gov’t Dismisses European Court Call To Compensate Man For Red Star Fine

Demonstrators detained by police for displaying red stars at the Attila József statue in Kossuth tér on Sunday are taking their case to the European Court of Human Rights. “The police should have investigated the context in which the red stars were displayed,” according to Green Left spokesman Zsolt Nyári.
The group was not carrying portraits of Josef Stalin or Mátyás Rákosi, but rather demanded jobs, bread and shelter, he said.
“The red star is also a symbol of the Hungarian Workers Party 2006,” Nyári underlined.
Justice Minister Tibor Navracsics said earlier this year that the government will not respect the European Court ruling that struck down Hungary’s ban on the red star as a symbol of tyranny.
