Xpat Event Report: Budapest Beer Festival
After the floods, came the pouring, and lots of it, at the 3rd Budapest Beer Festival. For beer connoisseurs, a ramble around the Castle District in the hot sunshine was the perfect setting to try out specialty ales from craft breweries, plus apple based alcoholic beverages in a 'Cider Grove'. The best Hungarian breweries, local “kezmuves” lager factories and the world’s beer super-powers were all on show. English, Irish, Belgian, Czech and German beers, the Fót Craft Brewery, the special elderberry porter of the Brandenecker Beer House and the plum and wheat beer of the Stari Brewery.

Two new craft drinks came out at the festival: the honey millet of the Millet Beer and the Elixír 18, a beer made of herbs by the Gyertyános Brewery. All these were available for tasting. Developing a beer culture does not need too much encouragement, but does need small, family breweries.

Through the Beer Festival, you could also purchase products and raw materials through a revolutionary new online system, called “rendeljvelunk.hu”, which enables the order and comparison of products. However, I personally prefer to try the stuff on the spot, and this was spot on.

As the sun shone down, the crowds poured in and the beer started flowing.
