Xpat Opinion: Another Important Moment In Hungarian-Jewish Relations
By Ferenc Kumin: Hungarian-Jewish relations, and the issue of anti-Semitism, are sensitive subjects here at home and abroad. That’s why it’s especially welcome to see good news of progress. And we’ve had a run of positive news on this subject lately.

As I posted earlier this month, after sorting out some administrative issues, the Hungarian government finally reached an agreement with the Claims Conference, clearing the way for the organization to settle claims of Holocaust survivors living outside Hungary. Also this month, the Hungarian Action and Protection Foundation in collaboration with the Anti-Defamation League successfully appealed to Facebook to shut down the page of an outrageous Hungarian-language news portal that spews anti-Semitic and anti-Roma hate speech. Many have called for the shutting down of the website itself, but it continues to operate through its web host in the United States.

And this. The OSCE has recommended that each of its member states formally monitor anti-Semitism in their countries. Previous governments have been struggling to meet this recommendation mostly due to lack of resources, but the current, center-right Hungarian government has made a step forward: we have engaged the Action and Protection Foundation to contribute to our monitoring effort. As a result of their monitoring mission, we hope to see concrete recommendations on how Hungary could continue to combat anti-Semitism. This government is committed to fighting racial hatred and extremists, and we’re keen to have partners like the Action and Protection Foundation who are genuinely interested in contributing constructively to that effort.
