Talks Break Down Over PM Candidacy Question In Hungary
Former prime minister Gordon Bajnai and Socialist Party president Attila Mesterházy went public on Friday with their different ideas on how to choose an opposition candidate for prime minister after failing to reach an agreement in talks earlier in the day.

The two also disagreed over the number of Socialist or Together-Dialogue candidates that would represent the left-wing opposition in individual constituencies.

Bajnai proposed that the prime ministerial candidate be chosen in a primary system, similar to that of the US, arguing that the selection should not be determined by personal ambitions, but by voters.

In response, Mesterházy said primaries should be held not only between the candidates for prime minister but in all 106 individual constituencies by the middle of October.

Mesterházy said a new situation has developed, as Bajnai had not mentioned his proposal before Friday’s meeting, “and if a hot line exists between us, it should have been warmed up”.
