Minister Martonyi welcomed the US–Russia outline agreement seeking the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons, as well as relevant decrees by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the UN Security Council.

The Minister urged timely and transparent implementation of the agreement and called on Syria to ensure that its chemical weapons are not transferred to other government or non-governmental agencies and to meet all its obligations including the provision of full access to relevant sites for international controllers.

On another subject, Minister Martonyi said that over 100 foreign countries and international organisations have indicated their wish to participate in the upcoming Water Summit in Budapest to adopt recommendations for the UN in the post-2015 period. Hungary supports the fact that water management and sanitation should be among the UN’s priority overall development objectives after 2015.

The Budapest Water Summit will take place between October 8 and 11.
