Hungary’s Media Authority To Sign Community Broadcast Licence With Klubrádió
The national media authority NMHH will sign a contract with Klubrádió on awarding the commercial broadcaster a licence to operate as a community broadcaster next Thursday, the authority told MTI. Under the contract, the radio operating now on the commercial Budapest 95.3 MHz frequency will switch over to the community Budapest 92.9 MHz frequency on Feb. 14, the authority said.

The opposition-leaning radio currently holds a licence to operate on Budapest-based commercial frequency 95.3MHz, which is valid for the next seven years. Under effective legislation, a single broadcaster is only permitted to operate one radio station within a given coverage area.

After a long legal battle surrounding the awarding of a broadcasting licence by the media authorities to the radio and after a municipal court ruling in October last year, the NMHH launched a procedure to conclude a broadcast contract with Klubrádió, enabling it to continue broadcasting as a community media service provider.

The NMHH assures the radio’s listeners that the broadcast switchover will be smooth as of midnight on Feb. 13, the authority said in a statement. All listeners need do is tune their radio sets to 92.9 MHz instead of 95.3 MHz.
