Hard To Believe Hungary’s Recently Arrested Former Socialist Acted Alone

Speaking about “a series of crimes unprecedented in Hungarian democracy”, Rogán said it was “difficult to believe” that leaders of the leftist parties had been unaware of what had been taking place.
The group leader urged answers to questions concerning the origin of “hundreds of millions” of forints in Simon’s undeclared Austrian bank account, and identification of those who helped him cover up his activities.
Rogán suggested that the parliament’s immunity committee should wind up its investigation by March 25 so that “as much of the funds of murky origin [and] the millions Simon had received in salary and reimbursements” from parliament could be recovered.
Simon, former deputy chairman of the Socialist Party, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of forgery.
Simon quit his post in February after reports that he had undeclared assets held on an Austrian bank account.
